Kit Harington Joins HBO’s Harry Potter Season 2 as Gilderoy Lockhart

Kit Harington is heading back to the world of HBO fantasy, but this time he will be stepping into the magical world of Harry Potter.

The Game of Thrones star has joined HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in the show’s second season. Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult, who was previously announced for the role but has exited the production because of scheduling conflicts.

The casting is one of the biggest developments yet for the highly anticipated television adaptation, particularly because Harington is returning to HBO after his acclaimed run as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.

Kit Harington Takes Over the Role

Harington will portray Gilderoy Lockhart, the famous wizard and Defense Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Lockhart is known for his flamboyant personality, exaggerated stories about his supposed heroic accomplishments and enormous confidence in his own abilities.

The character previously appeared on the big screen in the 2002 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where he was played by Kenneth Branagh.

Harington’s casting therefore brings a very different interpretation to a character already familiar to longtime Harry Potter fans.

Nicholas Hoult Exits the Series

Harington’s casting follows the departure of Nicholas Hoult, who had been announced as Lockhart earlier in August.

According to reports, Hoult’s existing commitments created scheduling difficulties for HBO. When the production schedule for Lockhart’s scenes shifted, it became difficult to accommodate his other projects, resulting in his departure from the series.

Harington was subsequently approached by HBO and agreed to take over the role.

The recasting means that the television version of Lockhart will now be played by a major actor already closely associated with HBO’s fantasy programming.

Harington Already Has a Connection to Lockhart

Interestingly, this is not Harington’s first time playing Gilderoy Lockhart.

The actor previously provided the character’s voice for the Audible full-cast adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, released in 2025.

That experience gives Harington an unusual connection to the character before he even appears on screen in the HBO adaptation.

Harington has also previously spoken positively about the Harry Potter franchise and his enthusiasm for the character.

Season 2 Will Adapt The Chamber of Secrets

The second season of HBO’s Harry Potter will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second novel in J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series.

Lockhart becomes one of the most prominent adult characters in the story after being appointed Hogwarts’ Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

The character’s arrival gives the second season an opportunity to introduce another major personality into the new television adaptation.

The series is designed to follow the books over multiple seasons, with each season focusing on one of the novels.

HBO’s New Harry Potter Cast

Harington joins an entirely new generation of actors playing the central characters.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout portrays Ron Weasley.

The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The series is being developed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes.

Season 1 Has Not Even Premiered Yet

One of the unusual aspects of the announcement is that HBO has already begun preparing Season 2 even though audiences have not yet seen Season 1.

The first season, which adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.

Season 2 is expected to begin filming this autumn.

That early commitment demonstrates the importance HBO places on the franchise and its plans to develop the series as a long-running television adaptation.

From Jon Snow to Gilderoy Lockhart

Harington’s casting is particularly notable because of his history with HBO.

The actor became an international star playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, one of the network’s most successful television productions.

He later returned to HBO for the financial drama Industry, where he played technology entrepreneur Henry Muck.

His new role as Lockhart gives Harington another opportunity to headline a major HBO fantasy production, although the character could not be more different from Jon Snow.

Instead of a brooding warrior, Harington will portray a vain celebrity wizard who has built his reputation around stories of heroic deeds.

A Major Casting Change for HBO

The decision to replace Hoult so close to production is significant, but Harington’s involvement gives HBO a high-profile replacement.

It also adds another recognizable name to an already star-heavy adult ensemble.

With the first season still months away from its debut, HBO has already generated considerable attention around the show’s second chapter.

Harington’s casting will likely become an important part of the promotional campaign once the series begins moving toward its second season.

What Happens Next?

The first season of HBO’s Harry Potter is scheduled to debut on Christmas Day 2026, introducing audiences to the new versions of Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest of the wizarding world.

Production on Season 2 is expected to begin this autumn, with Harington taking over as Gilderoy Lockhart.

For fans of the original books and films, his interpretation of the famously self-important Hogwarts professor will be one of the most anticipated elements of the show’s second season.

Looking Ahead

Kit Harington’s casting as Gilderoy Lockhart gives HBO’s Harry Potter series another major star while resolving the departure of Nicholas Hoult.

Harington brings extensive HBO and fantasy experience to the production, as well as the unusual advantage of having already voiced Lockhart in the official Audible adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

With Season 1 arriving on December 25 and Season 2 preparing to enter production, HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation is continuing to build its long-term cast and story.
