Disney Announces Zootopia 3 With Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan Returning

Disney is officially returning to the animal metropolis of Zootopia.

Walt Disney Animation Studios announced Zootopia 3 during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 on August 14, confirming that another sequel is in development. Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan appeared at the event alongside Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush to reveal the news.

The announcement comes after the enormous success of Zootopia 2, giving Disney another major animated franchise to develop as it expands its theatrical slate.

Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan Return

Ginnifer Goodwin is set to return as Judy Hopps, the determined rabbit police officer who has been at the center of the franchise since the original 2016 film.

Ke Huy Quan is also returning as Gary De’Snake, the character he introduced in Zootopia 2. Quan’s character became an important part of the second film’s story and will now continue into the third installment.

The return of both performers gives the upcoming sequel continuity with the latest chapter while allowing Disney to continue expanding the world introduced in the original movie.

Zootopia 3 Is Officially in Development

Disney has not yet announced a theatrical release date for Zootopia 3, and details about the plot remain limited.

The studio did, however, tease a new direction for the franchise during its D23 presentation. The next movie is expected to expand the world of Zootopia beyond the mammalian characters that have traditionally dominated the series.

The announcement reportedly teased the arrival of avian characters, suggesting that the filmmakers could explore another part of the animal society in the third film.

That could give the franchise another opportunity to introduce new characters and environments while retaining its established cast.

The Franchise Continues After Zootopia 2

The announcement follows the release of Zootopia 2, which became a major commercial success for Disney Animation.

The sequel brought Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde back for another mystery while introducing new characters, including Gary De’Snake, voiced by Quan.

Disney’s decision to move forward with a third movie demonstrates the studio’s confidence in the franchise’s continued theatrical potential.

Jared Bush Returns to the Franchise

Jared Bush, who co-directed the original Zootopia and serves as Disney Animation’s chief creative officer, was part of the D23 announcement.

Bush has played an important role in building the franchise since its beginning and has also been involved with other major Disney Animation projects, including Encanto.

His involvement gives Zootopia 3 continuity behind the scenes as Disney develops the next chapter.

Disney Continues Building Around Major Animation Franchises

The announcement is part of a much larger wave of Disney and Pixar news revealed at D23.

Disney also announced or provided updates on projects including Incredibles 3, Coco 2, Frozen 3, the live-action Tangled, Star Wars: Starfighter and Marvel’s upcoming projects.

The strategy shows how heavily Disney continues to rely on recognizable franchises while also developing new animated properties.

For Zootopia, the third film gives the studio another opportunity to turn one of its most recognizable animated worlds into a long-running theatrical franchise.

What We Know About the Story

Disney has not revealed a full plot for Zootopia 3.

The D23 presentation did provide one significant clue, however: the next film will introduce more bird characters to the world of Zootopia.

The idea follows the franchise’s approach of expanding its fictional society by introducing different animal communities.

More story details, additional cast announcements and a release date are expected as production progresses.

Why Zootopia 3 Matters for Disney

The announcement gives Disney another major animated sequel to build into its future theatrical calendar.

The first Zootopia became one of Disney Animation’s most successful original properties, while the sequel further established the franchise as a commercially valuable part of the studio’s lineup.

With Goodwin and Quan returning, Disney can continue developing characters audiences already recognize while introducing new elements to the fictional city.

Looking Ahead

Disney has officially confirmed that Zootopia 3 is in development, with Ginnifer Goodwin returning as Judy Hopps and Ke Huy Quan returning as Gary De’Snake.

The studio has not announced a release date or revealed the complete story, but its D23 presentation confirmed that the franchise will continue and hinted at a larger role for avian characters.

As Disney begins revealing more information about the sequel, Zootopia 3 is likely to become another major animated release on the studio’s future theatrical calendar.
